Magic Ink is a non-exclusive product; we believe technology should be shared with the world, and although these are some of the first Magic Tattoos ever created, when artists around the world express the creative freedoms and new variables that Magic Ink provides, we expect to see works of art with variables even we cannot yet imagine.
The Science Behind the Magic
Magic Ink is infused with photochromic particles. By controlling the exposure of photochromic particles to specific wavelengths of light, it is possible to induce reversible changes in color or transparency. Magic Ink’s photochromic particles are sensitive to UV light, which triggers a change in their molecular structure, resulting in a color shift. Once activated by UV light, the particles can be deactivated by exposure to visible light, restoring their original color.
FAQ
What is Magic Ink? - Magic Ink is a groundbreaking tattoo technology that lets you rewrite, erase, and reprogram your tattoos. Using UV-responsive ink technology, Magic Ink enables users to change the image or design on their skin instantly, painlessly, and thousands of times.
How does Magic Ink work? - Magic Ink incorporates UV-responsive pigments into a medical-grade, bio-safe polymer shell. When exposed to UV light, the pigments become visible, activating the tattoo. When exposed to white light, the pigments deactivate, making the tattoo design invisible to the human eye.
Is Magic Ink invisible? - When deactivated, Magic Ink particles are not visible to the naked human eye. What may remain visible during healing is the typical trauma to the skin caused by any tattooing process. Once your skin has had time to heal from the tattooing itself, your Magic Ink Tattoo will begin to reach its full potential. Any client interested in a Magic Ink tattoo must understand that the healing process for Magic Ink tattoos requires patience, and the timeline for when your tattoos will be fully “magical” is dependent on the individual’s biochemistry and skin type. - Have you ever had a scratch that takes a while to heal? Tattooing skin does similar damage, and the healing process and success of the rejuvenation of skin are factors directly associated with a person's biochemistry, immune system, and the care put into the healing process of the tattoo. You can find several examples of raw, unedited images and videos of Magic Ink activated and deactivated throughout the magic.ink website.
Is the process of erasing or changing a tattoo made with Magic Ink instant? - The process of erasing or changing the tattoo with Magic Ink is nearly instant. Applying white light to deactivate the tattoo particles will cause the design to disappear within seconds.
Does the process of changing or erasing the Magic Ink tattoo cause any discomfort? - No! The process of activating or deactivating Magic Ink is completely painless.
How long will Magic Ink stay activated or deactivated? - The duration of an activated or deactivated Magic Ink tattoo is controllable by use of the appropriate light. The UV-reactive pigments have been developed to allow activation or deactivation to last for a significant amount of time, but factors such as individual skin characteristics, exposure to light, and proper care can influence the time frame and intensity of the design. If a design is covered by clothing, it may last days, even months. - Magic Ink is usually deactivated by sunshine, but less commonly, it may be partially activated in some outdoor conditions. We advocate the use of sunscreen outdoors; sunscreens protect the skin and the tattoo, while ensuring that Magic Ink will gradually deactivate in sunlight.
How long does the Magic Ink's ‘magic’ effect last? - You can keep your Magic Tattoo activated or deactivated for any time period of your choosing. The duration of an activated or deactivated Magic Ink tattoo is controllable by use of the appropriate light. In environments with high UV exposure, your tattoos may appear when exposed. When you are in a room with a high concentration of white light, there is a chance that your tattoos will begin to turn off. In normal indoor lighting, your tattoos will last until you turn them off. Generally, Magic Ink tattoos that are activated but covered by clothing last longer because they are not exposed to light.
How many times can I activate my Magic Ink tattoo? - Multiple times per day! Activating and deactivating Magic Ink is fast, easy, and painless. You can activate and deactivate your tattoo thousands of times over its lifetime.
What does it mean to change the image in your skin with Magic Ink? One of the remarkable features of Magic Ink is its reprogrammable nature. Once a patch of Magic Ink is tattooed, users can change their tattoo designs as many times as they wish by selecting specific particles to activate or deactivate in whatever form or image you choose. - Magic Ink allows the user to change the picture in their skin. If you get a patch of Magic Ink tattooed, inside that patch can be a heart, a word, or an image. This tattoo can change thousands of times in your lifetime and many times each day, and it’s nearly instant.
Does it hurt to turn the tattoo on and off?
- No! The process of activating and deactivating your tattoo is entirely painless. Your tattoo transforms, appearing or disappearing almost instantly without discomfort.
Is it painful to get Magic Ink?
- Similar to a standard ink tattoo, the pain level of the tattooing process varies across clients and body parts. Various factors play into the pain level including the location of the tattoo on the body, pain tolerance, as well as the size and complexity of the tattoo.
Who invented Magic Ink? - Magic Ink is co-founded by world famous tattoo artist Keith ‘Bang Bang’ McCurdy, Nano-technologist Dr. Carson Bruns, and Mechanical Engineer Dr. Jesse Butterfield. Visit the link in our bio to learn more about the team behind Magic Ink.
Can I use any light to turn the tattoo on? / Do you need special lights to use this?
- To activate your Magic Ink tattoo, use the provided UV light. To deactivate your Magic Ink tattoo, use the provided white light.
- A cell phone flashlight can turn off your tattoo, but it’s generally not powerful enough. We recommend using the provided UV and white lights, as these have been extensively tested for safety and functionality.
Does Magic Ink require any special care?
- Caring for Magic Ink is a similar process to that of a standard tattoo. Steps include gently cleansing the tattoo, applying recommended ointments/moisturizers as directed, and avoiding excessive sun and water exposure to help ensure the tattoo's longevity and vibrant appearance.
- Ensuring your tattoo is clean and avoiding prolonged exposure to the sun are two of the most important. For full care instructions from our board-certified dermatologist, Dr. Mudgil, click the link below and read “All About Aftercare”.
Are there any allergic reactions associated with Magic Ink?
- “A board-certified dermatologist has reviewed every tattoo to make sure there are no adverse effects. We have some great internal data with Magic Ink. We have compared magic ink with conventional ink. Tattoos are incredibly safe as long as they are done by qualified artists who are placing tattoos in the safest possible way” - Dr Mudgil, HyperSkin Team Dermatologist
- Nothing in our formula has been proven to produce any allergic reactions, however as with any product, Hyprskn’s dermatologist Dr. Adarsh Vijay Mudgil recommends consulting with your skin care provider before use.
Are there any side effects? - As with any tattoo ink or tattooing process, there are potential risks of infection, allergic reactions, or skin irritation. However, although nothing in our formula has been proven to produce any side effects, as with any product, Hyprskn’s Dermatologist, Dr. Adarsh Vijay Mudgil, recommends consulting with your skin care provider before use. - It's crucial to ensure that the tattoo artist follows proper hygiene practices and uses sterile equipment. Individuals with a history of skin sensitivities or allergies should consult with a dermatologist before getting any type of tattoo. Learn more about safety by visiting the link below and navigating to “The Science of Magic Ink”.
Can I get a Magic Ink tattoo if I have sensitive skin? - Magic Ink has shown a safety profile at least equivalent, if not superior, to conventional tattoo inks. As with any tattooing process, there are potential risks of infection, allergic reactions, or skin irritation. It's crucial to ensure that the tattoo artist follows proper hygiene practices and uses sterile equipment. Individuals with a history of skin sensitivities or allergies should consult a dermatologist before getting a tattoo with any ink.
Can I add Magic Ink to an existing tattoo?
- Although Magic Ink has the potential to enhance existing tattoos, we recommend consulting with your tattoo artist about the range of possibilities here, as it will highly depend on your existing tattoo.
- For examples of how Magic Ink heals over other tattoos, visit the link in our bio and navigate to the Magic Ink tab on Hypskn.com. Kindly note that Magic Ink is currently only available in red.
How long does a Magic Ink tattoo typically take to heal?
- Although the overall healing process of Magic Ink is similar to that of standard ink, the visual heal will be slightly different. As with any tattoo, your skin will exhibit visible damage during the healing process. When standard tattoo ink is applied, it visibly covers the damage. When Magic Ink is applied, and as the ink begins to disappear, you will see the damage done to the skin through the process of tattooing.
Why should I get a Magic Ink tattoo?
- Get Magic Ink to be a part of the biggest revolution in tattooing. This innovative ink grants you control to reprogram and rewrite your tattoo, providing flexibility based on your environment, culture, or vibe.
- Magic Ink gives humans a one-of-a-kind ability to alter their tattoo on demand and explore a new path of personal expression that can change as you do.
- Magic Ink is an innovation that can enhance existing tattoos, allowing the user to create a picture on their skin that can change every day. Additionally, Magic Ink is revolutionary for those who are restricted by their culture or environment from getting tattoos, giving them the option to turn their tattoos on and off at will.
Can Magic Ink tattoos be exposed to the sun?
- As with standard tattoo ink, we recommend avoiding sunlight during the healing process. However, once your Magic Ink tattoo is healed, it is safe to be exposed to the sun. We recommend using sunscreen on the tattooed area when exposed to sun. - Magic Ink retains activation indoors but varies outdoors. In rare conditions of extreme UV and low visible light, ex. Under overcast conditions with high UV, where visible light is limited, Magic Ink can activate slightly. But more often than not it will not activate. To prevent this, the client can apply sunscreen - Magic Ink tattoos are activated by UV light from the sun. When UV levels are high, your tattoo will appear. However, if you apply sunscreen, the sunscreen blocks UV rays and only allows visible (white) light through — this keeps your tattoo deactivated. If you don’t want your tattoo to show or activate in the sun, simply apply sunscreen.
Does it work on dark skin?
- Magic Ink is safe for use in all skin types, and we have tested it on skin types 1-5. Currently, the only color commercially available is red, which, like conventional red tattoo ink, inherently appears less vivid than darker inks on more melanated skin types.
- There are 6 types of skin (lightest to darkest) - we have tested on types 1-5, but not type 6. We are actively working to find volunteers so that we can test further.
Is this FDA approved? - Tattoo pigments have historically been unregulated by the FDA, however, we expect that to change as MoCRA begins to be implemented, of which we are fully compliant. Magic ink is engineered with the safest and purest ingredients available, it has undergone rigorous safety testing and was designed to exceed the highest industry regulatory global standards. - Magic ink is the only tattoo ink using medical grade materials.
- MoCRA is Modernization of Cosmetics Regulation Act of 2022
What’s different about this vs standard ink?
- Magic Ink is the world’s first rewritable tattoo ink. Not only does Magic Ink allow for your tattoo to appear and reappear, Magic Ink is also a safer innovation than
standard ink. Magic Ink produces PMMA particles with standardized size and shape to prevent ink migration, unlike traditional inks, which use non-standardized particles.
- Our ink's precise particle size range is a game-changer in tattooing, offering exceptional benefits for both safety and aesthetics. Beyond safety, these characteristics also result in vivid tattoos that maintain their sharp and clear designs over a prolonged period.
Can you laser this off?
- No, Magic Ink is not engineered to be lasered off. The good news is, you can simply deactivate your tattoo with a white light!
Is this permanent?
- Yes! Magic Ink is permanent; however, unlike standard ink tattoos, Magic Ink gives you control over its visibility to the human eye as you activate and deactivate it.
Isn't UV light bad for you? - The UV wavelength that is required to activate magic ink is the UVA wavelength, ranging between 315 nm and 400 nm, which is the least harmful type of UV light and is not damaging to the skin. More information can be found on Hyprskn.com which explains the safe uses of UV light and methods of protecting skin from harmful UV lights.
- Magic Ink has been extensively tested and reviewed by Dermatologists and Dermatopathologists for safety. Magic Ink is made with medical-grade ingredients, has decades of safety and biocompatibility studies. Every Magic Ink tattoo has been reviewed by a board-certified dermatologist who agrees that Magic Ink is the safest tattoo ink ever made.
- Multiple variables contribute to the danger of UV exposure - the energy of exposure, time of exposure, and wavelength. Our UV light is VERY low power (1 watt) in the UVA spectrum. For comparison, UV lamps used in nail salons emit 20-30 watts of power and a tanning bed emits 100-200 watts of power! The activation of Magic Ink requires very low energy over a very short period of time - there is minimal UV exposure, and certainly nothing in the realm of worrisome.
What is the Ten of Hearts Study?
- The purpose of this study was to compare the behavior of Magic Ink to conventional tattoo ink in ten subjects to evaluate/support its safety and tolerability.
- To accomplish this, subjects received a heart-shaped tattoo using Magic Ink; an identical heart-shaped tattoo was placed on the exact opposing anatomic location using the same colored conventional tattoo ink (i.e. Magic Ink right wrist/conventional ink left wrist, Magic Ink right inner ankle/conventional ink left inner ankle etc.).
- Magic Ink and conventional ink tattoos were exceedingly well tolerated in all recipients, with the vast majority of tattoo recipients not experiencing any reaction to either ink. In the small minority of recipients reporting a reaction, these were minor in nature, fell well within the realm of “normal” tattoo healing, and were equally distributed between conventional ink and Magic Ink tattoo sites. Moreover, any reactions were all short-lived in nature, resolving within the first week or so.
What is the expected longevity of Magic Ink tattoos compared to traditional tattoos?
- 10,000 cycles in vitro (equivalent to 27 years); 5000 cycles without any degradation; two years in vivo without significant degradation, including 100 cycles performed safely and effectively within a 24 period.
What steps are taken to ensure the quality and purity of the encapsulated particles in Magic Ink to prevent any potential contamination or adverse reactions? (carson)
- It starts with using medical-grade ingredients - we’re likely the only tattoo ink manufacturer that does so. The ink is packaged in small vials to ensure single use. Ink is sterilized with gamma radiation after packaging.
How does Magic Ink address concerns related to the potential migration or dispersion of the encapsulated particles within the skin over time?
- Magic ink particles are specifically designed to stay in the skin. Most tattoo pigments that migrate to the lymph nodes are less than 200 nm in diameter, so Magic Ink particles were designed to exceed that size threshold.
