Every year somebody asks me: what's the best tattoo ink right now? Here's how I actually answer it — not with hype, but with the things that matter after the skin heals.

I've been making pigment since 1985, and the test for “best” has never really changed. It's not the loudest brand or the prettiest bottle. It's how the ink works while you're running it, and how it looks a decade later.

What Actually Makes an Ink the Best

Three things, and they all have to be true at once:

• It works with you at the needle. Good flow, clean wipe, fast saturation — so you're not overworking skin to force color in. A weak ink slows the whole session and traumatizes the skin doing it.
• It heals true and holds. The color you put in is the color that's there in ten years — blacks that stay neutral instead of drifting blue, greys that don't go green, brights that don't fade to nothing. That comes down to pigment quality and consistent particle size.
• It's clean and provable. Sterile, made to real standards, vegan, batch-coded. Safety isn't a separate thing from quality — it's part of it.

Match the Ink to the Job

There's no single “best” bottle — there's the best one for the work in front of you. For deep blackout and solid fill, our densest black, Zuper Black. For lining through shading from one bottle, Black Label, which stays neutral when you thin it. For black-and-grey realism, the Bob Tyrrell set's tonal ladder. For color, a clean high-load palette — start at the color range. And for Europe, or anyone future-proofing, the REACH-compliant GEN-Z line.

Why I Still Chase This

I started making color because the inks of the day didn't hold up, and to me that was unacceptable — your reputation heals into someone's skin and stays there. Four decades later it's still the only thing I'm chasing when a formula leaves the lab: ink that performs the day you use it and still looks right a lifetime later.
