Let me tell you the truth about testing new ink.
Most artists think testing starts when they open the bottle. Draw it down on paper, run it on synthetic skin, watch how it heals.
That's all good. I do it too.
But by the time you're testing the ink, you've already made the most important decision, which is where you bought it. And that's the decision that gets people in trouble.
So here's how I think about testing new ink, in the order that actually matters. Test the source first. Then test the bottle. Then test it on skin. Get the first one wrong and the rest won't save you.
Test the Source Before You Test Anything Else
Here's something most artists don't know. A lot of companies selling "their" ink never made it. They're refillers. They buy pigment somebody else already produced, pour it into a bottle, put their label on it, and sell it to you as their own.
And here's the part that really matters. They literally cannot tell you the truth about what's in that pigment, even if they wanted to. Every pigment that gets produced has a trade secret registration number attached to it, and that number protects the actual manufacturer of the pigment. So a refiller, by definition, does not have access to that information. That can be ten to twenty percent of the ingredients they simply don't know about and can't disclose to you.
We don't work that way. We make our ink in-house from pure cosmetic-grade pigment up. We do the mixing, the milling, the filling, the labeling, the packaging, all of it under one roof. That's the only way a company can stand behind what's in the bottle, because we're the ones who put it there.
So the first test is simple. Can the company tell you, in real detail, how the ink is made and who made it? If the answer is vague, that's your answer.
The Counterfeit and Bargain-Bin Trap
A lot of you saw the hour-long conversation I had with a Chinese manufacturer, the one that went viral. He sat there and told me how he created Intenze products, including Mario's Blue, and how they came up with all the names of the products. Straight from the source.
Here's the challenge. A lot of these manufacturers have figured out that our market is something they want to tap into. So they create many, many brands with absolutely no control over safety, over sterility, over the manufacturing environment. And when there's a problem with one of them, they simply change the name of the product, put a new label on it, and put it right back into the market over Amazon and similar outlets.
Forget about holograms and fancy seals. That's not how you catch these. Counterfeiters can fake a label all day. What they can't fake is the chemistry inside.
These inks aren't milled to a proper, consistent particle size, and they aren't made to USA or European standards. They look fine the day you put them in. Then they heal weak, they fade, and they pull blue or green a few years down the road, because the pigment was never right to begin with.
But here's the real point. The biggest challenge isn't that these people have the ability to manufacture. The real challenge is that the tattoo artist has to make the proper decision to buy a proper product, and not get caught up in fancy marketing schemes on social shop outlets. When you buy that stuff, you're not just doing yourself a disservice. You're putting your career, your reputation, and your client's health on full display.
So be cautious. Make the proper decision. And make sure your product does not come out of China.
Test the Bottle: Read What's In It
Once you know the source is real, then you look at the bottle itself.
Every professional pigment should come with a Safety Data Sheet, the SDS. That's the document that tells you the chemistry. Don't ever be afraid to ask for the SDS and the documentation on what's in the bottle. Every serious manufacturer will be more than happy to hand those over, and a lot of us already have them linked right on the shopping platform, attached to each product you want to buy. If a company can't or won't give you that, that ink doesn't belong on your station. Plain and simple.

Test on Skin: The Dot Test
Now the part everybody thinks of when they hear "test the ink." This is real, and you should do it.
Let me make something personal real clear here. After almost four decades in this industry, I still test every single color on myself, on my leg. It's well known in the trade, and it's been seen and photographed I don't know how many hundreds, maybe thousands of times. A spot of every color, on my own leg.
And I do it on purpose in the worst conditions. I don't baby it. I don't follow perfect aftercare. I want to see how that color behaves in the worst environment and still heals right. Because if it holds up on my leg with no special treatment, then the artist who buys it has a much better chance that it performs correctly for them.
This isn't a boardroom full of business people reading the numbers like a stock market. This is a tattoo artist, in an independent, artist-owned company, putting every color into his own leg before he ever asks you to trust it. That's the difference, and it's an undeniable one.
That's the spirit of a real dot test. It beats a scratch test because it actually mimics what we do. A scratch only touches the surface. We put pigment into the dermis, and that's a different conversation with the body. So test the way you tattoo.
Pick a discreet spot with skin similar to where the real piece is going, like the inner arm or behind the ear. Use a single needle, put in a tiny amount of pigment, and clean the area first with Intenze Cleanze Ready to Use so you're not reading a reaction that's really just surface bacteria.
Then wait. And I mean really wait.
Some irritation shows up in the first day or two, and that's usually just the skin being annoyed at being poked. A true pigment reaction can take weeks to show itself, sometimes a month or more, especially with reds. Normal healing settles down. A real reaction keeps going. It stays red, stays itchy, raises up, won't quit. If that happens, stop and send the client to a doctor.
Pre-screen too. Ask about nickel allergies, eczema, past reactions to ink. A two-minute conversation up front saves you a world of trouble later.
Test the Performance: How It Behaves Under the Needle
Safety first, always. But once an ink clears the source, the bottle, and the skin, you still want to know how it works.
Do a draw-down. Drag a thin layer across white paper and you'll see the real undertone and how transparent or solid it is, the stuff you can't see looking at a full bottle. That tells you how it'll read once it's healed.
Then run it the way you actually work. Test it with tight liners and with magnums. A new ink might need a small voltage adjustment to saturate right without you overworking the skin. Forty years in, here's what I've learned about testing ink. The bottle on your station is the last step of a long chain. If that chain started with a refiller or a bargain site, no amount of paper-testing fixes what's already wrong inside.
